ABOUT Suzie
I never thought I would enjoy cooking. Growing up, my family prepared dinner nightly and packed my school lunches, so I never bothered learning how to intuitively cook. For my summer job in an industrial kitchen, the only necessary skill for cooking was the ability to read and follow a recipe. However, that all changed when I started college and began to truly be responsible for the food that I consumed. Away from home for the first time, I did not have access to the family cook books or the members of my family to guide me step by step through the making of a meal. So, I did as any college student in the 21st century would do—I turned to social media. Through the past few years, I have been able to acquire cooking skills and food knowledge through TikTok, Instagram, and even YouTube. Holidays are now not only a time to spend together with my family, but they are a time for me to try out new online recipes on an unsuspecting audience—some of these recipes have now become annual staples in my household! There is still so much for me to learn about food preparation, cooking, and presentation, but because of social media, above all else, cooking is something that I now enjoy. I hope that cooking becomes something that all young people begin to experiment with, making new traditions in their own families that last for years to come.
